The English Book Fair Broke our All-Time Record!

The English Book Fair took place from September 23 to 27 in the FAC Lobby, headed by renowned bookstore and distributor, Libros, Libros, Libros, who has been our supplier for more than 10 years. Fun fact: the owner is Leigh W. Lockwood (‘65), an ASF alum! The reason we always invite Libros, Libros, Libros, besides them being the largest English bookstore in Mexico, is that they manage several brands including Scholastic, Usborne, Random House, Penguin, Hachette, Harper Collins, Simon and Schuster, Marvel, DC Comics and Chronicle Books.

The Book Fair Committee is led by Chair, Vero Aguilar (‘92). “I have a fabulous and enthusiastic team, who not only love the fairs, but also love to promote reading. The team is made up of Ana Elena Pérez (‘85), Lourdes de la Llata (‘99), Adriana Cazares, Andrea Hegewisch, Annie Ballesteros and Jessica Dounce. This Committee could not be as successful without the support of the PA Volunteer Committee, led by Mariana Torres Blair (‘96). Both Committees are part of the PA, who give us their unconditional support.”

One of the highlights of the fair this year was installing a reading nook for kids to enjoy their books. This was designed and donated by an ASF dad, Paco Arellano, and several moms, and the LS library helped with the cushions. Also, all the ECC groups that visited the fair during their library time were read to by our volunteer parents and enjoyed the books they chose. “This gave the fair a special vibe, and we love having the kids there,” shared Vero.

This year, we broke the all-time record with a sale of $902,300 pesos. From this, the PA receives an approximate of $245,500 pesos, which is always returned to the ASF community. These funds will be used to address different funds and needs, such as the Endowment Fund for Financial Aid. Last year, luminaries were donated to the FAC, in addition to the Endowment Fund for Financial Aid, Capital Building Fund and Bear Boosters.

The participation of volunteers this year was extraordinary! More than 140 volunteers participated in the fair, many being new families to the school, others being known faces or alumni. Daily, over 50 volunteers worked vigorously writing wish-lists for our students, guarding the entrance and exit, reading to our younger readers, and working as cashiers. They were all incredible volunteers, and because of their dedication and hard work, the book fair was a great accomplishment. “In addition to the main objective, which is to encourage reading, the community building of the event was reflected in the high number of volunteers we had, which was really moving,” expressed Vero.

We would like to thank all the teachers and deans for their incredible support; our wonderful librarians for their enthusiasm; Álvar Martínez, Visual Communications Specialist, for capturing the best moments and putting together an awesome video; and give a shout out to all those amazing energy-filled kids who visited our fair: this event is made for and by you! We would also like to extend a sincere, heartfelt thank you to all those marvelous parent volunteers who gave their time, talent and energy and made the English Book Fair 2019 possible. We appreciate all of the support that you gave the Parent Association during this book fair. Thank you again for being part of such a successful event!
