Grade 1 Zoo: Exploring Ecosystems Through Creativity

Grade 1 Zoo: Exploring Ecosystems Through Creativity

As part of their final PYP Unit, How the World Works, Grade 1 students embarked on their very first research project, diving into the fascinating world of animals and ecosystems. This unit was a collaborative effort between English and Spanish teachers and the Maker Space team, designed to create a meaningful and authentic learning experience.

Students investigated animals from various ecosystems, learning to research, write, create, and present their findings. They explored where and how different animals live, thrive, and interact with their environments. With support from all subject areas, they built understanding not just through reading and writing, but also through hands-on creation and storytelling.

The culmination of this work was the 1G Zoo—a vibrant, student-led exhibition where families were invited to visit and learn more about the animals and ecosystems studied. Each classroom became a different part of the zoo, showcasing the students’ research and presentations in both English and Spanish.

This project not only celebrated our students’ curiosity and creativity, but also marked an exciting milestone: their very first experience as researchers, creators, and presenters.
