Marcela Ruiz de Chávez Vélez ('12)
Despite her young age, Marcela is an example of a global citizen and a distinguished alumna for her professional dedication fighting climate change. Marcela has faced several challenges - including being diagnosed with COVID-19 recently in Paris - which she had to deal with on her own. All these experiences have led her to become a resilient, strong woman who can overcome anything! She has learned that life is unpredictable and that adapting is key to facing the future.
Take a look at Marcela's interview, where she shares her experience on coming back to Mexico with her family, reflects on her memories at ASF, and shares her professional experience and how she never gives up! About Marcela:
Marcela Ruiz de Chávez Vélez is a Chemical and Energy Engineer who is passionate about fighting climate change through the implementation of clean energy technologies and decarbonization strategies. She currently works as an energy modeler at the International Energy Agency (IEA) in Paris, where she is in charge of projecting the industrial sector's future energy demand.
After graduating from ASF, Marcela decided to pursue a Chemical Engineering degree at Universidad Iberoamericana, where she graduated Summa Cum Laude. She later moved to the UK to study a Master's degree in Energy Technologies at the University of Cambridge. For her thesis, she carried out an energy efficiency analysis that would drastically lower Cambridge's energy consumption and related carbon emissions. Motivated by this first project, she returned to Mexico City to replicate it in several industrial and sports facilities.
Her Master's studies were fully funded by the Mexican Ministry of Energy (SENER), where she was able to connect with world energy leaders. After her graduation, they gave her the opportunity to represent Mexico in Mission Innovation, a global clean energy initiative headquartered in London.
Marcela moved to Paris a year ago to join the OECD's International Energy Agency. Working alongside policy-makers made her realize that her work can turn into actions and have a real impact in the world. She wanted her career to be meaningful, and at this point, she realized she could become a key player in fighting climate change. The American School Foundation, A.C. Bondojito 215, Col.
