WELCOME

The American School Foundation is a wonderful place to build a career in education. Our School provides its teachers with new and exciting opportunities to learn and expand their capabilities in a truly collaborative environment in partnership with students, staff, parents and the larger community. We are dedicated to sustaining a positive work experience by fostering solutions to workplace issues that support the School’s goals and optimize the value of our employees. Our organizational point of view sees purposeful change as an opportunity for improvement which is identified individually through a cooperatively developed program of evaluation aimed at rewarding and retaining the most highly qualified staff.

Our goal is to create effective relationships, systems, and procedures that enhance the performance of faculty nd staff members. The HR department provides leadership, training and strategy development. Opportunities for international hires are available in each of the 4 divisions and across the subject areas. HR works with the School community to establish strong standards to select the best instructional leaders and to search for the highest qualified candidates using all available resources. We utilize timely recruitment to build a diverse team that brings expertise in subject content, instructional skills, technology, and the social and emotional development of our students.

Recruitment this year will take us to hiring fairs at The University of Northern Iowa, U.S.A., Queen’s University in Ontario, Canada and the International Schools Services Hiring Fair in New York City. We also will consider video conferences as an alternative if we don’t coincide with candidates at the same fairs.

The initial contract period is for 2 years and international hire status may extend to a maximum authorized period of 5 years. The opportunity exists to petition for a two-year extension. Salaries are paid in local currency. Benefits include a housing subsidy, a one-time relocation allowance, an annual airfare subsidy which are all paid in the peso equivalent of U.S. currency. The school also provides an international major medical insurance policy, life insurance, disability insurance and a defined contribution pension plan.

We offer an Orientation Week, remunerated by stipend, at the beginning of the first year in order to support adaptation to Mexico City and our school community. A  team of teachers arranges for the week’s activities and other teachers serve as real estate guides to the most attractive apartments available within teacher budgets.  Once the apartments are identified, excursions are planned to find furniture for those who have not rented furnished apartments. Pending documentation issues are resolved, bank accounts are opened, identification cards and photocopy cards are distributed. Group activities and meals are provided. And room time is planned for as well.

Mentoring is also provided throughout the first year.  Teachers have the opportunity to apply as mentors during the Spring semester.  Care is taken to find mentors for the specific positions that will be filled by incoming hires in the following school year. Once selected, the mentors receive a workshop to prepare them for their roles.  As soon as candidates sign their letters of agreement, they are assigned mentors and contact information is exchanged. The Mentoring Committee meets on a bi-monthly basis in order to discuss and meet the needs of the incoming hires, especially during their first semester at the School and to a lesser extent during the second semester. The Committee plans a 2-day workshop which the mentors and incoming hires attend following the Orientation Week.  This usually includes a presentation by a specialist regarding adjustment to culture change. 2 or 3 times per semester, cultural outings are planned which include incoming hires, their mentors, and anyone else in the community who have an interest in participating.  2 or 3 barbecues per semester are scheduled to bring the mentors and the incoming hires together with other interested community members.
